If I could send a message back to my younger self. I would in a heartbeat. The message would be sent to the 30 year old me. It wouldn't be a do over of my life, but some friendly advice to cherish a few key moments, and to steer clear of a few pitfalls. Since that really isn't an option, I can only pretend a future self wrote me a message and to follow the advice I'd give a younger me.
- Cherish the time you have with close friends. Situations change, and sometimes people quickly find themselves doing other things, or somewhere else.
- Don't stop reading full books. I've realized that I now read 2-3 novels a year, instead of 2-3 novels a month. My attention span and memory have dwindled and I wonder if it's in direct proportion to the number of books I no longer read.
- Avoid random motion. Too much of it will lead you nowhere.... 5 years later you're in the same spot, just older.
- Don't expect approval from someone. You won't get it, and in the grand scheme of things, you don't really need it to be validated.
- Listen to more Iron Maiden.
- Get rid of that clutter. Too much crap requires energy to maintain. Do some decluttering every year, so you don't have any of that crap holding you back.
- develop those ideas.
To Be continued...

OMG... if I were to list the top 3 things I did at this job...
1. Sit in airports waiting for planes. 2. Conference calls with flaky clients. 3. Troubleshoot log files....
and that being said... I can think of no better way to spend a friday when it's gorgeous outside, having an earpiece wired into the conference center with a flaky client while, anxiously reading log files trying to figure out why the lovely program is scrambling the data stream....
Lovely...
And to top it all off... I haven't been able to download any e-mail to my laptop. Cisco VPN client wasn't working, and more time was spent time with an earpiece on the fone with our friendly neighborhood IT Helpdesk, who had nothing better to do but to help me re-install certificates and reboot for over an hour... Nothing worked until I said... Umm... where are the log files for the VPN client?
You have to enable them... manually...
and so there I was reading my VPN handshake log file, trying to figure out why the server was rejecting my VPN request. Rejection on a Friday. Memories of being a single how soon is now.
And so the virtual tools driver that I had loaded yesterday to sniff packets somehow killed the VPN client. Sniffer drivers, I loaded so I could figure out why the Robot wasn't talking to the Analyser.
Sniffer drivers which let me do my job, but then prevent me from doing other aspects of my job.
And I'm going to find some red wine... and some meat to dilute it.

To Everyone...
Please stop smoking.
With all these weddings and babies popping up in my surroundings, I've noticed that everyone is quickly becoming more grownup as time moves on. Protocol faux pas have plagued me not because I'm a rude bastard, but because I genuinely have no idea what proper protocol is.
Newborns are easy, stuffed toys, cute stuff etc... What do you get new parents when you visit them the first time?
When at a wedding full of the in-laws, is it better to be polite and reserved, or engaging and fun? Standard bar tricks need not apply...

Punked from the Hour.
Hour: I wanted to ask you about a famous fight you had, an alley fight, after UFC 38 in London, England. The story is you were against the wall picking off guys one by one, but legend has it that the first thing you did was take off your watch.
Liddell: Yeah, because as I was pulling these guys off this one guy, someone's hitting me in the back of the head. And I, seriously, I just got that watch. My buddy had given me my first-ever really nice watch, and I had never had a nice watch, you know? So as I was turning around, "Oh you motherfucker," you know, and as I was walking towards him, people thought I was crazy because I was walking towards this guy that had just hit me, taking my watch off, putting it in my pocket before I hit him back. I was like, "What do you think I'm worried about? You hitting me again?" I was worried about my watch! I'll worry about getting hit later. I can take getting punched - I don't wanna lose my watch. You know, two guys in that fight lost Rolexes, so you see I did the smart thing and put it in my pocket!
BG: Definitely agree. I have a box full of broken watch bands to prove the point. I think the first thing you learn when you start sparring seriously is to take your watch off. For me, it's the last practical thought before you're switch into fight mode.. heheh :)
On another note, I just finished my first conference call with my new team. They're all American and some ex-military and like the US stereotype, the call ended with some banter about guns and ammo....

LJ is poised to fall...
http://valleywag.gawker.com/5124184/the-russian-bear-slashes-a-social-network
I'm archiving my stuff now.
for those who don't know.
ljarchive is the bomb Windows only, no Mac version, but I have it running in a VM.
You can find me at evildrgo@gmail.com
Tis a shame, because as much as I like FB for the quicky, WTF are you doing now? I rather like the anonymity of LJ, and the control I have when posting off colour things that I can keep from the "Normals" on FB.
Time to get the shit archived.
BTW... I love running Windows under VMWare on my Mac. It's like almost as aweseome as duck fat french fries...

I spent the evening cuddling up with a cute little puppy and playing with a bunch of cats fat enough to be considered little cows. Nothing like animal therapy to keep the psyche going.
Even positive change is emotionally draining.

So he did it, and now we will not have any new laws debated and / or passed for another couple of months.

While, I was totally saturated with Election drama, this whole new twist in the house of commons I find rather amusing. For my friends who aren't following here's the low down.
We had an election about two months ago. The Conservatives won the most seats but not enough to form a majority government.
Election Results 155 needed for majority Conservative (Reform (1)): 143 Liberal: 77 Bloc Quebecois: 49 New Democratic Party (NDP): 37 Green: 0
The new parliament convened on Nov 19th with the throne speech. Harper, the minority Prime Minister (PM) started governing like he had a majority and now faces a confidence vote, less than a week into the new parliament.
Since it is impractical to call another election so soon, the Opposition have banded together to propose a Coalition government should the government fall. So instead of facing the confidence vote, Harper will ask the Governor General to prorogue parliament and suspend the vote until next year.
And now the dirty tricks come out.
Proroguing parliament means that parliament will not sit for 6 weeks. This means that no laws will be debated or passed in the house of commons. With all the election drama over the past few months, this would mean Canada hasn't effectively debated and passed laws since May.
During this time, he's going to bribe the Liberal and NDP backbenchers with Senate and Cabinet appointments to reduce the opposition ranks. While he does have a shortfall of 20 seats, Harper has already tried to bribe a dying man for his vote.(2) I wonder what kind of tricks he'll try to p
For those who say the coalition has no right, well, this is what happens in a Minority situation. We don't vote for the PM directly. The party that has the most votes has the confidence in the house and they appoint the PM. If the house vote down the government, the opposition parties can form a coalition, BUT the house can only do this if they actually vote. The GG has the power to prorogue parliament and is obliged to do what the PM asks. So if the PM says suspend Parliament until next year, well... that's going to happen.
My main beef with the reformers and Harper, are the divisive nature of their politics. They pick a group, alienate them, then demonize them to their supporters. This is ok if you're a religion and paint everything into us vs. them, but government has to be all inclusive. We all live here and the government must build an environment where we can all live together. If you're a religion you can just go out and slaughter everyone and go about your business. So Harper has blamed all of this on Quebec. As most people outside of this province don't understand the Bloc (3), he's demonizing the whole episode as a cheap ploy to destroy the country.
Just because we didn't vote for you, doesn't mean we don't have the right to live here too. Attacking Quebec is dumb and does not give any street cred to a government that is trying to be an all country party.
Anyhow, let's see how this plays tomorrow, but I think we're going to see some really low ball plays.
(1): The Reform Party rebranded themselves as the Canadian Conservative Reform Alliance Party (CCRAP), then gobbled up the bankrupt Progressive Conservative party to form the present day conservatives. They're representation are the rural areas in the west. (2): Two senior Conservative members offered dying MP Chuck Cadman a million dollars to vote against the Liberal Budget in 2005. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuck_Cadman#Legal_controversy (3): conversely, just like most easterners who don't understand the Reformers
